Model History

The team's Ducati is a Ducati 748E. This is the base model of the 748 range, the specifications of which are shown below. It is the little brother of the iconic 916, the only real differences being a smaller capacity engine and a slightly narrower rear wheel (as a result of the slightly reduced power) which also helps to sharpen up the handling. Motorcycle News’s review sums the bike up perfectly:

‘sublime handling on smooth surfaces, terrible comfort, high running costs and a feel-good experience most other motorcycle can’t touch. Even well over a decade on few motorcycles match the simple, gorgeous curves of the Ducati 748.’

Not only did the 916 dominate the World Superbike Championship for the best part of a decade, the 748 was pitched perfectly against the inline 4 cylinder 600cc bikes at world and national Supersports level with much sucess. Carl Fogarty used the 916 and later the 996 in the WSB and took both the bike and himself to legendary status.

Renowned for having a very torquey engine due to the V-twin design, and superb cornering speed and stability, the bike is a pleasure to ride on the open road or racetrack. At the same time this range of Ducatis were notoriously difficult to ride in traffic, having a heavy clutch and very tall first gear, and the riding position meant that a large proportion of the drivers mass was put through their wrists, making long journeys uncomfortable and sometimes even painful! However since the team use the bike as more of a ‘fun’ machine, this was not an issue, and the superb handling characteristics coupled with the stunning looks and great balance of handling/power the bike was chosen as being ideal.

The bike is used primarily for a bit of fun on the road and trackday use. Although the ‘base’ model in the range, the bike is a high performance piece of kit. Some modifications have been made to the bike in order to improve both the performance and the aesthetics. These are shown on the following page.

All servicing of the bike is undertaken by the team.




Type: Liquid cooled 90 degree DOHC V-twin with 4 valves per cylinder.

Capacity: 748cc

Bore x Stroke: 88mm x 61.5mm

Compression Ratio: 11.5:1

Engine Management System: Marelli IAW 1.6M engine management system with one injector per cylinder.

Clutch: Dry multiplate clutch, hydraulically operated.

Transmission: 6 speed constant mesh.

Final drive: 94 link 520 chain, drive ration 2.71:1 (14T F, 38T R)

Steering Head Angle: 24 degrees 30 minutes

Trail: 97mm

Front Suspension: 43mm USD Showa hydraulic forks with 127mm travel. Adjustments include spring preload, compression and rebound damping

Rear Suspension: Sachs monoshock with fully adjustable linkage. 71mm shock stroke. Adjustments include spring preload, compression and rebound damping

Tyres: Front 120/60 ZR17, Rear 180/55 ZR17 fitted with Pirelli Dragon Evo tyres

Brakes: Front, 2 x 320mm fully floating steel discs with Brembo four pot calipers. Rear, 1 x 220mm steel disc with Brembo single pot calliper
